Construction crews have been working hard to ensure that as many upgrades as possible are prepared prior to the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
So far, the areas around the tennis courts have been cleared and leveled. This area will be closed and fenced off to be used as an equipment storage area and construction “headquarters” starting on Wednesday, June 26.
Crews have also started to work on the middle school parking lot at the top of Westlake Drive to the right of the District Office. More than 100 new parking spots will be added, which will help to resolve the lack of availability of parking for students, staff and visitors.
While these projects will certainly add efficiency and convenience to the Westlake campus, officials say it will be “somewhat challenging” as locals live through the summer construction.
“The supplies required to upgrade the boilers, HVAC systems, roofs, bathrooms and many other projects will occupy a tremendous amount of space and will leave room for very limited parking on the Westlake campus,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kurtis Kotes. “With that in mind, we ask for the public's cooperation in following some general guidelines when visiting in order to maintain safety and order on campus.
"During the construction, students, staff and visitors are requested to find a spot in the first row in front of the high school, which is currently designated as the Senior student parking area. Parking will be unavailable at the bottom of campus by the tennis courts.
"Furthermore, all deliveries are requested to be directed to the District Office at 825 Westlake Drive, where mail will be distributed to the high school and middle school."
The campus track will also be closed from Monday, July 8 to Monday, July 22 for construction purposes.
Kotes said these upgrades will “go a long way” toward bringing the campus “up to 21st century standards.”
“Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping us achieve our facility’s goals,” said Kotes. “When students and staff return to school in the fall, the improvements will be nearly complet. .. . As always, thank you to the entire Mount Pleasant Community for your support of our schools!”
